Bikram

Tomorrow is the start of week number seven. It’s always so difficult to determine whether time is going by quickly or not (if that makes any sense at all.) During the physical and mental (and sometimes, emotional) struggles of the week, it seems as though every clock in the universe just lost power. But when looking back, it sort of feels like we just started.
Anyway, things went pretty well this past week. Monday morning’s class was hell. Absolute hell. Something about the humidity in the air and the lack of ventilation, made it feel as though we were all suffocating. It took every ounce of my effort to stay in the room for the last 17 postures (which is about the last hour of class!) I just kept repeating "No options; no big deal; I feel fine." About twenty people left the room, but I’m glad that I stayed because afterward, we all got lectured about endurance and mind control.
The next five classes were pretty great, partially because the vents on the roof were opened in order to allow us to breathe. Bikram said that our Wednesday evening class was the best ever. I also delivered my “best ever” posture on Wednesday. Tuesday’s delivery was the worst, but then I worked diligently and discovered the meaning of pay-off. Several peers approached me afterward to tell me how awesome it was. It’s funny because I was extra nervous due to the fact that one of the instructors from my home studio in the Lower East Side (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s son) was one of the evaluators. But everything aside, it made me feel great. Hopefully that will be a turning point for me. We only have eight more postures to memorize.
Another instructor from New York was visiting this past week. Troy, from the Brooklyn Heights studio, led a really incredible class. I started to get a little bit bored in yoga classes during the latter part of the week, but I’ll hopefully be able to remedy that with some motivational thoughts. Does anyone have any advice for me?
Last week was also a great week because we found out that our Saturday 7:30am classes have been canceled indefinitely (…or until Bikram changes his mind again.) That’s right. It turns out that we were too sweaty and leaving the carpet too wet for his beloved 10am class. So now we have two full days off and we are all loving it. (We’ll see how my achy, tight body feels about that tomorrow morning at 9:30!)
I can’t wait to come home in three short weeks! I’m missing everyone so much.
